The Nanny, The Role Model - But What Do Nannies Actually Do?

People who choose to be a Nanny do so as their professional career choice because they want to be able to provide that 1-1 care and interaction with the children, they have a natural instinct to nurture, support, guide, help and encourage children to learn new things and develop their skills and reach those milestones, they also play a big part in being an exemplary role model for the children to learn from in developing social skills, manners, respect, in addition to preparing the children for nursery and school environment.

Someone choosing to be a nanny as their professional career choice is highly likely to have been to College or University to learn about the early years and child development, and will have a commitment to further learning and refreshing of relevant skills as part of their continuous learning and development (CPD).

As well as attending to the daily needs of the children, a typical nanny day may involve:

  • planning the day with age appropriate activities and outings to encourage learning, stimulation and development of each child.
  • taking older children to and collecting from school or nursery
  • planning and preparing of healthy meals and snacks for the children
  • supporting with reading, learning and helping with homework
  • keeping the children’s bedrooms and play areas clean and tidy
  • supporting the parents to ensure consistency with the care of the children
  • fitting in with the routines of the family

A nanny is NOT the same as a babysitter or au pair! Nannies take great pride in their work, looking after the children as though they were their own, usually providing care for the children on a sole charge basis whilst the parents are at work.

Finding and choosing a nanny job is unlike any other kind of job – when choosing to work so closely within a family home with children you CANNOT and SHOULD NOT take a job for the sake of taking a job! If there is any doubt about whether the job is right for you –if you cannot solve the doubt, then this is probably not the job for you! Parents very much rely on their chosen childcare professional and children very quickly become attached to those who are providing care for them. Choose wisely!

IMPORTANT: CLEAR REGULAR AND CONSISTENT COMMUNICATION, PARENTS AND NANNY WORKING TOGETHER IN ADDITION TO MUTUAL RESPECT AND FLEXIBILITY ARE ESSENTIAL TO ENSURING A NANNY AND FAMILY ARRANGEMENT WORKS WELL.
